Areas Covered by NVQ Level 2
The Level 2 assessment evaluates your competence in these key areas of bricklaying:
Setting out and building basic-to-complex brickwork structures, including cavity walls, solid walls, and decorative features. This includes measuring, cutting, and laying bricks to specification.
Following health and safety practices and work planning, including risk assessment, site preparation, and managing your work area safely.
Understanding drawings, specifications and building methods, including reading plans, calculating quantities, and applying building regulations.
Maintaining high standards in bricklaying and trowel work, including checking levels, alignments, and finished appearance of brickwork.
Selecting, preparing, and using appropriate materials, including different types of bricks, blocks, mortars, and accessories.
Identifying and resolving common issues in bricklaying, including working with challenging conditions and integrating with other trades.
NVQ Level 2 Requirements
To complete the Level 2 assessment, you need:
Active experience in bricklaying and trowel occupations
Must be working on-site as a bricklayer
Work records, site documentation, and evidence of bricklaying work
No formal qualifications required, just practical experience

The NVQ Level 2 Trowel Occupations assessment typically takes 4-6 weeks to complete. This includes 2-3 on-site visits to observe your practical bricklaying skills.
No. All observations take place while you're working on-site. Our assessors will visit you at your workplace and observe you carrying out your normal bricklaying duties.
You'll need to provide examples of your work, including photographs of completed brickwork, site documentation, and witness testimonies from supervisors or colleagues. Our assessors will guide you on collecting appropriate evidence.
Yes. Once you receive your NVQ Level 2 certificate, you can apply for your Blue CSCS card. You'll also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test if you haven't done so within the last two years.
You should have practical experience working as a bricklayer on construction sites. There's no specific time requirement, but you need to be currently working in the trade and competent in the core skills of bricklaying.
