Areas Covered by NVQ Level 2
The Level 2 assessment evaluates your competence in these key areas of carpentry:
Installing floor joists, partitions, doors, and window frames. This includes structural timber elements, stud walls, and rough framework installations.
Fitting architraves, skirting boards, doors, and kitchen units. This covers finishing woodwork, hanging doors, installing staircases, and fitted furniture.
Understanding drawings, specifications, and woodworking methods. This includes reading plans, calculating quantities, and applying appropriate techniques.
Following health and safety practices and work planning. This covers risk assessment, proper tool use, and coordinating with other trades.
Identifying and selecting appropriate timber and wood-based products for different applications, understanding grades and properties.
Demonstrating proficiency with hand and power tools, including accurate measuring, cutting, and joining techniques.
NVQ Level 2 Requirements
To complete the Level 2 assessment, you need:
Active experience in carpentry and joinery
Must be working on-site as a carpenter
Work records, site documentation, and evidence of carpentry work
No formal qualifications required, just proven experience

The NVQ Level 2 Carpentry assessment typically takes 4-6 weeks to complete. This includes 2-3 on-site visits to observe your practical carpentry skills.
No. All observations take place while you're working on-site. Our assessors will visit you at your workplace and observe you carrying out your normal carpentry duties.
You'll need to provide examples of your work, including photographs of completed carpentry, site documentation, and witness testimonies from supervisors or colleagues. Our assessors will guide you on collecting appropriate evidence.
Yes. Once you receive your NVQ Level 2 certificate, you can apply for your Blue CSCS card. You'll also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test if you haven't done so within the last two years.
That's not a problem. The NVQ Level 2 in Carpentry is based on your practical skills and experience rather than previous qualifications. If you're currently working as a carpenter and can demonstrate the required skills, you can achieve this qualification.
