Areas Covered by NVQ Level 2
The Level 2 assessment evaluates your competence in these key areas of bricklaying:
Setting out, excavation and ground preparation skills. This includes site clearance, leveling, and preparing ground for construction works.
Drainage systems, foundations and concrete work. This covers installing drainage pipes, manholes, inspection chambers, and preparing and placing concrete.
Understanding site plans, levels and construction methods. This includes reading drawings, using setting out equipment, and applying correct construction techniques.
Following health and safety practices and ground risk assessment. This covers identifying hazards, implementing safety measures, and maintaining a safe working environment.
Working safely with construction plant and equipment, including coordination with machine operators and understanding capabilities of different machinery.
Selecting and using appropriate materials for different groundworks applications, including aggregates, concrete, and drainage components.

To complete the Level 2 assessment, you need:
Active experience in groundworks and site preparation
Must be working on-site as a groundworker
Work records, site documentation, and evidence of groundworks
No formal qualifications required, just proven experience

The NVQ Level 2 Groundworks assessment typically takes 4-6 weeks to complete. This includes 2-3 on-site visits to observe your practical groundworks skills.
No. All observations take place while you're working on-site. Our assessors will visit you at your workplace and observe you carrying out your normal groundworks duties.
You'll need to provide examples of your work, including photographs of completed groundworks, site documentation, and witness testimonies from supervisors or colleagues. Our assessors will guide you on collecting appropriate evidence.
Yes. Once you receive your NVQ Level 2 certificate, you can apply for your Blue CSCS card. You'll also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test if you haven't done so within the last two years.
That's not a problem. The NVQ Level 2 in Groundworks is based on your practical skills and experience rather than previous qualifications. If you're currently working in groundworks and can demonstrate the required skills, you can achieve this qualification.
